Jamie's Harold Ramis Tuition Fund

My name is Jamie Hasty, and I'm 24 years old. I live just My passion for filmmaking has been developing and growing over the course of my whole life. It began as a tiny storytelling seed planted by my mother, and was cultivated into a drive to create meaningful narratives for the screen, because I felt the audience for the screen was larger and more eager than the one for the page. Some of my earliest memories are of comfort and reading, and characters and their stories continue to ease, inspire, and invigorate me to this day. What started as the fancy of a five-year-old (“I wanna be an author!”) has somehow morphed into a true life goal in my young adulthood; the only thing that’s “changed” is the medium, from the page to the screen. Although my personal infatuation with books will be lifelong, I realized in college that book-lovers are a minority, and whatever messages I want to send will reach more ears (and eyes) on the screen; not only that, but comedies on TV (such as and especially American Dad) were huge sources of comfort to me during very dark times in my life, and as soon as I realized that, I was eager to be a part of something similar, in the hopes of “being there” for someone the same way that Seth McFarlane was “there” for me.

This program is the ultimate next step in my career as a storyteller and filmmaker. Saint Xavier provided me with an outstanding educational foundation rooted in humanitarianism, diligence, and critical thinking, but to truly apply those skills to the work I want to produce I will need more focused instruction: that’s where the Harold Ramis Film School comes in. At Harold Ramis, I will learn how to apply my talents and skills in a practical way to the world of contemporary comedy, which is exactly the place I want to be; I have no interest in dramas, or horrors, or any of the other genres that (in my opinion) just serve to emotionally manipulate. I want to study comedy; I want to make people laugh, and therefore, make people think. I can think of no better place to do that than a film school born of the Second City, a comedy club historically renowned for its satire. I believe comedy is the best vessel with which to teach, because it offers distance between touchy subject matter and the audience, allowing more room for them to think on the matter. Not only will the Harold Ramis Film School provide me with the skills and knowledge I need to move forward in my career, but thanks to its connection to the historical Second City, I believe it can offer me working insight on building a writing team, reaching out to collaborators, and networking in 2017, which is just as important, if not more important, than the creative aspects of filmmaking. There is strength in numbers and participating in a team is crucial to success, which something I have learned during my years at the Second City Training Center and I expect the Harold Ramis Film School will continue supporting team-building and networking similarly.

I'm hoping some of the kindness I've put out into the world will find it's way back to me here! I love comedy, it has pulled me through dark times in my life, and I want to create some in the hopes it can do the same for someone else someday. Plus, it's just awesome and fun. If you love me, Ghostbusters, Harold Ramis, comedy, writing, progessive ideas, or just wanna give money to a kind stranger, it'll be paying for my education. OR if you or someone you know gets a power trip from lording their money over someone, I can be that someone. Expect a letter in the mail of a tiny bottle of the tears of joy I cried over your donation,
