Donate to Devin's Long-Term Recovery

Spende geschützt
On Saturday, August 17, Devin was in a horrible traffic accident while out on his scooter in Phoenix. He was going straight through a green light when a driver, who did see Devin coming, tried to make a left-hand turn in front of him and hit him practically head-on. Unfortunately, Devin was not wearing a helmet and was thrown into the windshield of the car. He sustained numerous injuries to his head and chest.

He was quickly brought to Valleywise Health Medical Center and taken emergently to the operating room to release the pressure and swelling to his brain. The neurosurgeon said that had he come in 5 minutes later, he would not have made it. He also had a chest tube placed for a collapsed lung. He has a left-sided skull & facial fractures, epidural brain bleeds to both the left and right sides, thoracic separation, numerous rib fractures resulting in a flail chest, horrible road rash to the right hand and wrist, scattered bruising across his entire body and various cuts and scrapes. He will eventually need facial fracture repair once more medically stable.

Due to how shattered the left side of his skull was from the accident, the surgeons are unable to piece it back together. He will have to wear a helmet to protect his brain for at least a year before they can place a skull implant to repair the defect.

He has been exceeding all expectations and has been able to come off the ventilator and breathe on his own. His chest tube, feeding tube, JP drain from his brain, arterial line, and intracranial pressure sensor have all been removed. He is no longer on sedation and starting to slowly take food by mouth. He remains somewhat confused and very restless (shocker, I know) but is able to recognize people, can remember his name and date of birth, and still has his sense of humor.

While we are all extremely grateful and lucky to still have Devin with us, he has a very long road to recovery and will not be able to work for at least a year. He will require a prolonged hospital stay followed by inpatient neuro therapy. As we all know, his insurance will not cover everything, especially with him being out work for a prolonged time. Anything that can be donated is greatly appreciated and will go a long way in taking the financial worry off his and his families minds, allowing them to focus on his health, well-being and recovery.

P.S. DON'T STAY BORED
