Years ago, I began supporting A Reaching Hand, a small yet powerful initiative near Cape Town. They work tirelessly to uplift children, youth, single mothers, and families in some of the most impoverished communities — places where daily life is a constant struggle. What sets them apart is their deeply human approach: they recognise the face behind the hardship, and with compassion and determination, they offer support that truly changes lives.

Now, as I celebrate my 75th birthday and the 25th anniversary of Velo Mondial, I’ve invited Bev Johansen — who leads A Reaching Hand — to join the celebrations in Amsterdam. Bev will speak about the work they do, the lives they impact, and the urgent need for continued support. I hope her presence will inspire you as much as her work has inspired me.

I’ve had — and still have — a good life. That will be central to these celebrations. Not everyone gets to say that. Many don’t. And it’s not thanks to any personal virtue or achievement — just sheer luck (and perhaps a pinch of creativity).
