"Don't Be A Stranger"
Hi, I'm Natalie Rutman, a film student, and this semester I'm excited to share my newest short film project.
Director's Statement:
Exploring the themes of love, addiction, redemption, and forgiveness,
this subtle story deals intelligently with deep emotional issues, and their impact on the
ones we love. Its nuanced storytelling allows the audience to connect deeply with the
dimensional characters in a personal story that lands as real without being preachy or
pandering, is respectful to the subject matter, and is inspired by real life events.
Story:
“Don’t Be A Stranger,” explores the heartbreaking struggle of a young woman, Olivia,
grappling with the complexities of a loved one's addiction. Told through flashbacks of
her years-long relationship with Caleb, from childhood friends to blossoming lovers
contrasted with the present day realities of addiction and its effects.
Olivia, torn between anger and love, desperately wants to help Caleb but reaches a
breaking point. She yearns for the friend she once knew, but fears he is beyond reach.
The devastating climax arrives with a phone call from a friend, leaving Olivia in despair.
The final scene reveals Caleb's room, where Olivia finds a childhood project titled
"Don't Be A Stranger" with a picture of them together and a heartfelt inscription of their
best-friend status. The image poignantly highlights the depth of their bond and the painful
loss of their connection.
This story captures the emotional toll of addiction on both the addict and those who love
them. It highlights the conflicting emotions of love, anger, and helplessness, ultimately
leaving the audience with a sense of loss and a reminder that friendships should be cherished.
Why we need funding:
Short films are expensive. Many costs go into production from required location insurance,
money to feed the over thirty amazing cast and crew members who agreed to work for free,
to props, costumes, production design, music rights, and various others. The film is short but visually ambitious. I don't take support lightly, this is my first Go Fund Me for any film. I'm doing it because I believe strongly in the story and want to bring it to life respectfully.
I hope to share it with you soon.
