I'm Arden Ogg, Director of the Cree Literacy Network. Along with my friend and colleague Heather Blair of the University of Alberta, I'd like to raise funds for a permanent granite marker in memory of our dear friend Donna Paskemin. Donna's remains are buried at her home Reserve, Sweetgrass First Nation in Saskatchewan. I visited there last summer. Her place is currently marked by a wooden memorial, lovingly crafted by family members. Even though Donna will remain young and vibrant, funny and passionate in our hearts forever, the wooden memorial is now deteriorating. Family members have given their blessing for us to commission a replacement.
In 1999, Heather and Donna worked together with Priscilla Settee of the University of Saskatchewan and Sally Rice at University of Alberta to found CILLDI: The Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute at the University of Alberta.
Now in its 25th year, CILLDI continues to offer Indigenous students an intensive annual "summer school for Indigenous language activists, speakers, linguists, and teachers" that continues to train language warriors to fight as Donna did for the reclamation and revitalization of Indigenous languages all across Canada.
