Donell Henry King Jr. was a 12 year old boy from Cleveland's East Side. On June 1st, 2020 he was fatally shot and killed by accidental gun fire. His loss is tragic to all who knew him.
I was his third grade teacher during my first year teaching and quickly developed a bond with Donell as soon as I met him. He was charming, charismatic and a great leader. He was also one of the most nurturing, sympathetic and loving kids I had ever met. He used to fall asleep in class a lot. I found out it was because he took it upon himself to wake up late at night to help his mother with his new baby sister, even when she insisted he get his rest. Helping and caring for others, especially his family, was his instinct.
Donell was goofy in the best way. He wanted to see the people around him smile and did what he could to brighten my day every single day through the struggles of my first-year teaching. He was so talented in so many ways. He had aspirations to be an athlete but also worked with me to explore science and community activism as well.
Donell was full of promise and potential. I was honored to have had the chance to work with him and love him. I was welcomed into his family with open arms and I grieve with them now through this devastating time.
Donell's family is struggling to find the funds for a proper funeral and memorial. I would like to help supplement the upcoming expenses as much as possible. Any contribution will help and go to directly benefit Donell's grieving mother and his younger brothers. Donell's wonderful character is truly a testament to his family and I can't bear to see them struggling in this way. They deserve time to process such a tremendous loss without the financial stress.
