Hello! We are Lian Zandbelt and Femke van der Stroom, two Dutch medical students from Nijmegen who are completing several months of clinical rotations in Tanzania. We have started our placement at Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC) in Moshi, a large referral hospital where surrounding hospitals refer their most critically ill patients to.

As a result, the emergency department receives many severely ill patients who require continuous and close monitoring, as without this, they are at high risk of deterioration or death. During our first weeks in the emergency department, we encountered many situations in which patients could not be adequately monitored due to a lack of monitors or monitors that were incomplete or malfunctioning.

Proper monitoring of these patients is essential. Doctors and nurses need to be able to assess vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and temperature in order to provide safe and effective care. We would like to support the emergency department by purchasing a portable vital signs monitor (VS-600 Vital Signs Monitor), which can be moved between patients and care areas, and in this way contribute to improving patient care.

If we raise more funds than are required to purchase the monitor, the remaining money will be donated to the head of the emergency department, who can use it for future needs such as repair costs or other essential equipment for the emergency department.

Hoi! Wij zijn Lian Zandbelt en Femke van der Stroom, twee Nederlandse coassistenten uit Nijmegen die een aantal maanden in Tanzania coschap lopen. Wij zijn gestart in het ziekenhuis Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre (KCMC). KCMC is een referral hospital, waar alle omringende ziekenhuizen hun patiënten naar verwijzen.

Op de spoedeisende hulp komen daardoor ernstig zieke patiënten terecht, patiënten die continue goed gemonitord moeten worden, omdat zij anders een groot risico lopen om te komen overlijden. Gedurende onze eerste weken op de spoedeisende hulp, zijn we veel situaties tegengekomen waarbij patiënten niet goed gemonitord kunnen worden, omdat er niet genoeg monitors/incomplete monitors zijn.

Tijdens het monitoren van dit soort patiënten, is het belangrijk dat de artsen en verpleegkundigen weten wat de bloeddruk, hartslag, saturatie, ademhalingsfrequentie en temperatuur van hun patiënt is. Wij willen hen graag helpen door een verplaatsbare monitor aan te schaffen, zodat we op die manier kunnen bijdragen aan betere zorg.

Op het moment dat we meer geld ophalen dan nodig is voor de monitor, zullen wij dit geld doneren aan het hoofd van de spoedeisende hulp, zodat hij dit geld in de toekomst kan besteden aan bijvoorbeeld reparatiekosten of andere noodzakelijke benodigdheden op de spoedeisende hulp.
