To all my friends, neighbors and strangers who were moved to donate I am beyond grateful for your kindness and generosity.

People who know me understand that I don't often ask for help, but am happy to give a helping hand when I can. I've been a self-reliant small business owner and along with my husband, we've been working for decades to build a good life.

We've felt safe in our neighborhood, getting to know most of our neighbors. After this tragic event, we are coming together to protect ourselves better through Neighborhood Watch, security cameras and contact sharing. We are far more vigilant about who wanders down our street.

I am hoping our whole Eugene community can come together with an eye towards a hopeful future. I refuse to let this man win. I will not become frightened and paranoid. I will maintain my joyous love of life and I am hoping the same for all of you.
