Rescuing these dogs from being killed in shelter
Hello All-
I am asking for your donations to recover personal funds that were needed for a very grassroots effort to save 5 dogs from death row at the Roswell Animal Control in NM on August 2. They were set to be euthanized on the day I was able to pull them and find them all safe homes. It was quite a feat that took 4 full days, but in the end, mission was accomplished...at least for these 5 dogs.
I paid for all of these costs out of my own pocket because I felt the clear call and ability to help these dogs- I was very happy and able to lend the time and womanpower needed for this rescue- to foot the financial bill alone will be much harder for me.
With the help of a woman named Katelyn, who I'd never met until we were loading the dogs into our cars in Roswell, Cages 66, 16, 12, 6 and 9 (Cage 9 not pictured here) were all rescued.
All of the dogs pictured in this photo above were set to be euthanized on August 2, just 2 weeks after they were picked up by animal control. Some of these dogs were pets, and most were strays and street dogs.
Roswell Animal Control does not make this process easy- in order to pull the dogs, we had to formally adopt them, and in order to adopt them, we had to pre-pay for all of them to be neutered, microchipped and given a rabies vaccine, as well as the costs incurred for flea/tick medicine to be able to load them into our cars, leashes and collars, dog food and treats, kennels for the transport, not to mention a 7 hour roundtrip adventure to pick them up and drop them off. (and another 12 hours round trip to bring 2 of the dogs to CO).
1 dog went to a home in Albuquerque (to Katelyn's), 2 dogs went to a home in Santa Fe, and I had to drive 2 of the dogs to a shelter in Golden Colorado last week in order to find them good homes as they ended up not being a good fit for the original family who wanted to adopt them after the rescue. I was told by Santa Fe based rescue shelters that these dogs, because they were pit bull mixes, did not stand a chance in NM and would end up back on the street or dead, and that I should take them to CO, which I did.
To "surrender" these dogs to safety and their highest chance of adoption in CO, incurred an additional cost. I am happy to report that one of those dogs was adopted a few days ago, and one is set for adoption in the next week. The Foothills Animal Shelter is a multimillion dollar facility and was able to take and treat these dogs with incredible care and resource. (including needed medical treatment). Their adoption time is usually less than a week.
Any amount you can offer will be much appreciated!
Attached are pictures of these dogs both in their cages at Animal Control and once they were released , as well as receipts for the vet bills and Colorado shelter. You can see the names of the dogs under "Patient name" as well as the date. We paid for the procedure of one more dog that was rescued by a person a few hours before we got the the shelter (Tyson). The rest of the dogs- Ace, Sterling, Charlie, Wyatt and Tennessee were all loaded into our cars.
The dog situation in NM is heartbreaking. We have no neuter law. Many dogs end up on the street and we have one of the highest kill rates in the country. If you ever find a stray dog wandering, DO NOT CALL ANIMAL CONTROL. The dogs will likely end up dead. Call the humane society or another trusted shelter!
Thank you! please feel free to ask any questions here on the crowdfund
Uncovered Costs were as follows:
$868 prepaid for all 5 dogs to be neutered, chipped and given the rabies vaccine- a requirement to be able to pull them from a shelter
$440 to surrender to already adopted dogs to the Foothills Shelter in Golden CO
$322 at PetCo : leashes, collars, flea/tick meds, food, treats, kennels
$200 towards gas for 19 hours/ 1200 miles of total driving. (Santa Fe- Roswell- Santa Fe- Golden CO- Santa Fe)
Any donations that are over this amount will be given to "Peace of Mind Rescue" in Santa Fe- a 501 c3 .
