On June 11, 2023 my 6 y/o niece Lia was taken to the hospital for severe stomach pains. After several tests, the doctors diagnosed her with cancer.
She was diagnosed with a Wilms tumor which is a rare kidney cancer that mainly affects children. Also known as nephroblastoma, it's the most common cancer of the kidneys in children. Wilms tumor most often affects children ages 3 to 4. It becomes much less common after age 5, but it can affect older children and even adults.
A few days later, the tumor and her left kidney were successfully removed and she is recovering well from surgery. Now comes the hard part. On Wednesday June 21, she had her first round of Chemo. The initial plan is for 19 weeks of chemo therapy pending the outcome. As of July 14, 2023, Lia’s number of treatments and intensity has been increased. She will undergo a minimum of 7 months of Chemo.
With this devastating diagnosis, her mother, an RN, has been forced to take a leave of absence. Not only will she not receive a pay check for the next 7 months, but she will also be required to pay the insurance premiums to maintain their healthcare coverage. The donations collected here will be provided directly to my brother and his wife to cover medical expenses, health insurance, mortgage, and everyday household expenses.
