About a couple of weeks ago a man whose experiencing homelessness, Mickey, came into my veterinary hospital with a lost dog he found abandoned in Southern San Diego. I helped him try and locate the owner if any but didn’t have any success and have not heard back from any postings with the humane society and other lost dog pages. My interaction with Mickey that day made me want to learn more about him and his needs as he was so kind and engaging in our conversation. I gave him my number and since then have been trying to help him in any way possible. What I’ve learned is Mickey is a kind-hearted 55 year old man struggling in a way he doesn’t deserve. He’s had an unfortunate life background and has been dealing with homelessness for the past 4 years, struggling to get back on his feat again after COVID hit and the lack of availability in homeless resources (long wait times for housing assistance and medical attention). He also suffers from a medical condition called Lupus that causes a lot of chronic pain. He’s contacted homeless resources in the past and been met with 2 year wait times for housing or doesn’t hear back. Mickey needs to get in to see a doctor to get management of his condition and help with disability qualifications. Me and my mom have currently been paying for him to stay at the Motel 6 in Carlsbad this past week while we’re experiencing the heavy rain and while we try to look into resources for him. I wanted to reach out to my community, family, and friends to see if anyone has the means or resources to help us on our mission to try and get Mickey the help he needs. The most important things needed right now are donations to help keep him in the motel while we explore resources and as another storm is expected to hit San Diego and also to help pay the medical bills for a doctors appointment.
