For those of you that do not know who Derek is, he is many things. To his family, he is a loving father and husband. To the students and staff at Abramson Sci Academy High School, he is a guardian, a mentor, and a dearly beloved friend. Derek loves our students fiercely and he has dedicated over 8 years to keeping our school community safe.
On April 9th, Derek endured two consecutive strokes while on the job. It wasn’t until others on staff noticed visible symptoms in Derek that he finally realized what was happening. When he arrived at the hospital, he showed no vital signs. After hours of work from a team of more than 10 doctors, Derek finally stabilized. Had it not been for the fast action of his colleagues and of the doctors, Derek might not have survived the occasion.
Derek’s doctors estimate that he will be out of work for 3-4 months, so we’re looking to raise at least $4,000 by May 27th. 80% of the funds raised will be allocated to his household bills with the remaining 20% reserved for medicine.
Seeing and talking Derek now is inspiring. The doctor leading his treatment mentioned that in his 20 years of work, he had never seen a person recover from what Derek went through. Already, he has regained the ability to write and is slowly, but surely, making it onto 2 feet again.
