Dave (Zee) Ziemke is suffering from ALS.

About Zee:
Zee is a Vietnam Veteran from Tracy, MN. He was diagnosed with ALS in the spring of 2019after battling many health issues for the past 7 years. It started with a hip replacement, then a back surgery, and then having many issues with balance that he dealt with for a few years which lead to his diagnosis of ALS. No matter how hard Dave tried to exercise and fight to gain his balance back he, for some reason, kept getting weaker. For the last year, it was hard for him to leave his house, he had troubles walking and moving in general. Just recently, the ALS foundation and the VA came together to help Zee as much as they could. They helped him get an electric wheel chair and a handicap van so his wife Jennie could get him to and from appointments without worrying about him falling and getting injured. Although they helped cover most of the cost of the van, it didnt cover all of the cost. Also, to keep Zee home, with his wife and pets, they have to do many updates to their home (major construction) this includes widening walkways, adding an additional exit out of Zees bedroom, taking carpet out and putting in harder floors, makingthe bathroom handicap accessible etc... once again, they’re helping with some of the cost, but not all. If he can’t get these necessities, he will be put in a veterans home over an hour away from his wife, friends, family, and pets. Thats just part of their struggle, it was suggested that Jennie stays home to take care of him,in which she would have to quit her job with absolutely NO compensation. They cannot afford to do this so they are currently looking at other options, maybe to have someone come into their house to help out. There’s also the cost of traveling to and from appointments in Sioux Falls a few times each month, Jennie taking time off work for appointments, and many additional medical costs in which you wouldn’t expect, being a Vet.

A little about Dave: Dave served two tours in Vietnam, received many honors and metals. He has always been there for anyone and everyone who was in need. He enjoyed mowing lawn and doing snow removal for friends and family. He always made time to visit loved ones in the area. He enjoyed doing wood-working, playing horse-shoe, playing bean bags, going fishing, traveling with his wife Jennie and family, and helping  with volunteering as a foster for the Tracy Area Animal Rescue. Dave loved giving back to his community! He used to dress up as “Santa” for the nursing homes in the area and for the kids in his family. He also volunteered doing “meals on wheels” by delivering meals to those in the area in need. Dave was also on the board of trustees for his church in Tracy. Now, because of how much the ALS is destroying his body, he is unable to a lot of these things he has always loved doing. However, no matter how ill Dave is getting he rarely misses telling someone Happy Birthday. He is always showing support for others in so many ways. I’ve  never met someone so selfless and caring. I know I am missing lot on here about the great things Dave has done for his friends, family, and community, but if I write anymore this will turn into a book!

Lets all give back to Dave, show him some support in return. Let’s cheer him on and help him push to keep fighting for as long as he can, since there is no known cure for ALS. You got this Zee!! You fought for us and our country, and now we are fighting for you!!
