On April 9, 2005 our family had a life changing experience. Christopher Stoler was in a motocross accident that caused severe brain trauma and for him to be left paralyzed. He was hospitalized at the Lima hospital for about two months and was transferred to the Ohio State University hospital for many weeks. At the beginning of his accident he lost his memory and had no clue what had happened and had no clue who anyone was. Thanks to the doctors, nurses and the support of his family, he started to regain his memory. At the beginning, he was not qualified for therapy because he was in a semi coma state, which did not allow him to do anything at all. After many battles, both his parents insisted that he should attend Rehabilitation Center for Neurological Development, but his physician at the nursing home refused to sign the paperwork, until they found a physician that would sign the required paperwork for him to attend therapy. Since then he goes to the Rehab Center in Piqua, Ohio where they work with him to help gain motor skills back in his limbs. He also goes to a speech therapist to gain his speech back. In 2009, he said his first word since the accident, “mom”. From then on he has slowly learned his kid's names all the way to "i love you." From the start he had a feeding tube through his stomach to get the nutrition he needed. With further improvements he has been making, he is now able to eat pureed food and soft foods from apple sauce to pumpkin pie filling. Today, he is able to make small conversations and has the same bubbly personality he always has.
Throughout the years he has been switching between the Piqua Nursing Home and to his mom’s house in Piqua. At his moms house he would pay for home health nurses to come in and take care of him mornings and nights so he could continue to stay at home. Now because of financial issues, Chris has to continue to live at the Piqua Manor and his family continues to visit him there. All of his money has been going towards the rehab and the manor bills in full payments each month. Chris now has a limited time at the Rehab Center he attends because of financial issues. With all his money and his moms money going towards these expenses they have no money to get a reliable van for transportation. The van they have been using now is not reliable and soon they will not a way of transportation for Chris. The van is being used for bringing Chris to family gatherings, for holiday gatherings, and taking him to his kids school events. He loves being able to be there for them as much as possible and being able to feel involved and connected is important for him. Majority of the money raised will go towards a reliable handicapped van and any funds left over will go towards his rehabilitation and trying to bring him home. We thank everyone in advance that donates. It is greatly appreciated!!
