Sunday, August 25, 2019 late evening, Sovann Sdoeung passed away at the age of 73. She was a Cambodian immigrant fleeing the genocide ruling of Pol Pot in the 1970s. She had to abandon her life, as millions did in the historic Cambodian period. Only during the start of her success, she had to give up everything in fear of death, torture, and starvation. With luck and blessing, she was a refugee living in America and had start from zero, once again. Only this time, instead of chasing the rat race of life, she wanted to enjoy life with the family she had left.
She was my mother and the strongest in a family of 5. Her two oldest daughter passed away well ahead of their time in 2012. It left my mother with me, Vasna Sdoeung, the oldest son and Davis Chaing the youngest son. She was strict and disciplined which made us and her grandchildren very strong.
One thing she did well was being a provider. There was no day where she under fed us, a family of 5 and the grandchildren of 5+. Even with a low budget that was close to nothing, our bellies were always full. Because of that she gave us love and unity that last beyond our childhood.
As a family uniting again for her, we want to give her a wonderful and honorable funeral for family, friends, and elders to remember. She thought, she was the only one left from the Pol Pot era. There are others besides her friends, family, and many elder Cambodians who know her personally. Lets bring them and the Cambodian community to her. Remind her, she is not alone, still loved, and know there are many others alive from the Pol Pot era who care.
All funds will go toward her funeral expenses which includes:
* 3 days of ceremony (after passing away), the 7th day ceremony (spirit awakens). These ceremony includes monk visitation, chants, prayer, donation items, and misc.
* food and water for family, friends, elders, and Cambodian community who attend the ceremony
* funeral planning: casket, viewing room, cremation, etc.
