Donating Anti-Racism Books to Nevada Children

In light of the murders of Ahmed Aubrey, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd in the last several months and countless others in the recent past, continued discussions around race, racism, and resistance are needed. Not just for the short term, but for the long term. One of the many ways that we can begin to shift society's perspective on race and work against the systemic racism that infiltrates American society is to begin having more meaningful discussions with our children. 

"Beyond addressing issues of race and racism, this children’s reading list focuses on taking action. It highlights resistance, resilience, and activism; and seeks to empower youth (of ALL races) to participate in the ongoing movement for racial justice. Children not only need to know what individual, institutional, and internalized racism looks like, they need to know what they can do about it" (The Conscious Kid website, who compiled the books on the list we will be purchasing).

In Las Vegas, a great non-profit exists that provides under-served communities with access to reading material: Spread the Word NV . However, are those under-served communities receiving books that reflect their own stories? We can work to make that happen by raising $5,000 to buy books that tell the stories of black and brown folks in a way that is geared to children. With this money, we will purchase and donate these books to Spread the Word NV, who will then ensure they get into the hands and homes of children within Nevada's under-served communities. 

EDIT: We have reached our goal of $5,000!! Thank you so much. Of course, every dollar we raise will go towards buying even more books. 

With $5,000+ we will be able to buy at least 15 each of the following books (retailing at about $20 each)--for a total of at least 300 books. We will be purchasing these books from a local, Las Vegas bookstore.
