TNR – trap, neuter, return, we use humane traps to catch the cats and take them to be neutered. We think this is where we make the biggest impact in Laois. Feral cats have a very tough life and there is a lot of hidden suffering in this population. Intact males are driven to roam, fight and mate. Intact females end up having several litters every year and work very hard to make sure their babies survive, only for them to start the same cycle. Cats can become pregnant at 4 months and this breeding and fighting is a very efficient way to spread disease. Every year we come across cats in a terrible state, dying of feline leukaemia or feline aids. Usually slowly being smothered by a chest lymphoma or starving because their mouth is so ulcerated they cannot eat. Currently we react to calls from the public but we would like to be able to target particular areas where we know there is a huge problem. This approach has been shown to be the most effective, we trap all the cats in one area and then move to the neighbouring location. This will increase our vet bills but it is the best way to control this suffering.

So if you like cats this is the best way to improve their lives or if you don’t know that you actually like cats yet, this is the best way to keep the numbers down, everyone is happy!

1. Improves their quality of life, their calorie requirements go way down and they no longer roam. They have time and energy to keep themselves clean and shiny

3. Fewer cats being euthanized due to illnesses/fighting/injuries

4. Fewer unwanted cats needing rescue

5. Stabilizes feral cat colonies, numbers can only reduce

6. Less fighting and spreading of disease

7. It works!! Most other methods do not!
