My niece Zeniyah is requiring a complex, life-saving surgery in Cincinnati, which will involve bypass and a minimum 6-week recovery away from home. This procedure can only be done at this hospital due to the complexity and rarity of the surgery.
Zeniyah has faced major medical challenges since birth on July 28, 2024. She was born prematurely at 36 weeks and required a CPAP support for her first 6 days. Though initially believed to be a healthy baby, she struggled to gain weight and was diagnosed with failure to thrive. Between September and April, she was hospitalized multiple times with severe breathing issues that were repeatedly dismissed as minor respiratory infections. It wasn’t until May 2025, after six admissions and worsening symptoms, that she was finally diagnosed with a rare birth defect - complete tracheal rings, severe tracheal stenosis, and subglottic narrowing, leaving her with only 33% use of her airway.
My sister Amber, a single mother of four, has already missed substantial work due to Zeniyah’s hospitalizations and has no paid time off left. She is facing serious financial strain, with the added costs of travel, housing, and living expenses during Zeniyah’s surgery and recovery. She had hoped to stay at the Ronald McDonald House, but she cannot apply until she is physically in Cincinnati and there is already a waitlist. Discounted hotels are an option but extremely limited. Everything earned would go directly toward travel, lodging, transportation, and essential bills while my sister focuses entirely on her daughter’s recovery.
