Donate to Val's Life-Saving Bone Marrow Transplant
Donation protected
Hello, my name is Delores (Dee) Eastwood. My wife Val has two types of bone marrow cancer, MDS and Multiple Myeloma. We live in Nichols, NY. She has been under the care of oncologists in our area for almost five years. However, since her recent test results were unusual, she was advised to go to Roswell in Buffalo because they weren't sure how to treat her. For the past nine months, we have been traveling back and forth to Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY, for Val's diagnosis and testing—it's been an uphill battle for both of us.
She has acquired many good doctors who have been studying and working together to find the best way to treat this rare condition, as it involves two different bone marrow cancers. To sum it up, she finally received her Bone Marrow Transplant at Roswell in Buffalo on August 14, 2025, after some rescheduling setbacks due to her fainting twice at home and having RSV.
She will need to stay there for another 45 to 60 days, depending on how she feels and the results of ongoing tests. I will be her caregiver during this time. We have spoken to the social workers at Roswell about financial assistance. We found a place to stay, which wasn't cheap, but it is a nice place. Thanks to your donations, we were able to afford this stay.
As you know, there are no free accommodations in Buffalo like some states offer for cancer patients. Expenses such as co-payments, bills not covered by insurance, and food are additional costs we face. She has been discharged after three weeks in the hospital to return to the apartment with me. A home care nurse visits once a week for 60 days to change her port site, and more visits may be necessary if we stay longer. Today, the nurse taught me how to give her magnesium through the port, which must be done daily. She is doing very well, but the first hundred days are crucial. Her labs must remain normal, with no red flags. Her diet is special—called the neutropenic or low-microbial diet—designed for people with weakened immune systems—and her clinic appointments are continuous every day.
During these first hundred days, we hope her cells will recover from the donor, and we are praying for a full recovery. Right now, Valoree is doing excellent; the doctors say she is their star patient. Her strong will plays a big part, as she is a resilient woman like her mother, with a positive attitude. With all your prayers, how can we go wrong?
We understand that times are tough, so please don't feel obligated to donate anything. Just pray—that helps too!
Thank you for taking the time to read this.is.
