Help Cancer Patients in Kenya Get the Support They Desperately Need

I am a 61-year-old retired special education teacher, and part of my life story includes being diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma—an incurable blood cancer. I was fortunate to have medical insurance and access to excellent healthcare, which allowed me to receive the treatment and support I needed. Today, I am in what doctors call a complete stringent response, meaning no detectable disease. This experience has filled me with immense gratitude, but it has also opened my eyes to the heartbreaking reality that many people around the world don’t have access to the same resources.

Through my volunteer work as a mentor to cancer patients, I was connected with John Kagwi, a fellow teacher from Kenya who, like me, battled cancer. Unlike me, John had to travel all the way to India for his stem cell transplant. He understands firsthand how difficult it is to fight cancer, especially when basic needs—like food and medicine—are out of reach. Determined to help others, John founded The Six Bridges Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting cancer patients in Kenya who are struggling to survive.

Every day, John receives calls from people facing cancer who are desperate for help—some need food, others need pain medication, and many lack the means to travel to life-saving treatments. Initially, this fundraiser aimed to provide six families with food for six months. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the first $225 raised has already made a difference, helping families in crisis.

Then something happened that changed made me realize the goal of this GoFundMe campaign needed to be altered. The last $50 raised was sent to John, and he expressed deep appreciation. But before using the funds, he asked me how the money should be spent. The original goal of this campaign was to provide food, but I had a strong feeling there might be a greater need. I told John to use the money for whatever was most urgently needed. That $50 was used to purchase much-needed pain medication for a severely suffering cancer patient. This moment made me realize how critical it is to direct our limited resources where they are needed most.

Now, our goal is not limited to only providing food, but to help cancer patients in Kenya with their most urgent needs—whether it’s food, medication, or transportation to treatment. No one should have to fight cancer while also battling hunger or suffering in pain without relief.

I invite you to join me in supporting The Six Bridges Foundation. This new organization has no resources other than what John, and now me through this fund raising effort, can piece together. The process of developing a program such as this is immense. You can be assured that every dollar sent to John is used for the benefit of a person facing the challenges of cancer. I have a strong desire to help. I know John does as well. He is on the ground visiting cancer patients, providing whatever he can to help alleviate the suffering he sees first hand. He tells me of his frustration when he is not able to do more when he knows what is needed. I ask you to do what you can to help. Every donation, no matter the amount, directly benefits cancer patients in need. Let’s come together and bring hope to those who need it most.

Please donate today and share this campaign with others who may want to help.
