Megan is a smart, creative 14-year-old who loves reading, crafting, nature, wildlife, and especially birds. She enjoys volunteering as a junior counselor for kids camps at a local park and dreams of becoming an ornithologist (bird scientist) and bird bander. The day after New Year's Day, she was diagnosed with a mass in the brain that appears to be a mixed-cell germinoma. While the final results of the pathology report are still unclear, she will be starting chemotherapy and may need surgery and/or radiation therapy to shrink the tumor. She’s also receiving medical care for problems related to the tumor, including vision loss, diabetes insipidus, and other hormonal issues. She’ll need long-term medical treatment and monitoring for the foreseeable future.
This situation has put a huge financial burden on her family. Megan has two younger siblings and her parents (both self-employed) don’t have health insurance and aren’t sure what type of financial aid they will qualify for. Their ability to work will be limited as they care for Megan and her medical needs as well as Megan’s two younger siblings. Any and all contributions and prayers will be greatly appreciated.
