Support Leanne Unruh in her recovery from 2nd degree burns

Many of you are aware that our friend Leanne Unruh had a scary accident at Burning Man this year. This crowdfunding campaign is intended to help her cover the many unanticipated expenses that occur due to a serious injury — overseas, or anywhere — in the early phases of the emergency, and after, during recovery.

The good news: Leanne was covered by airlift and medical insurance. The not so good news: she is incurring costs that are not covered by insurance, and will lose income for several weeks while she recovers from her injuries. Leanne will benefit from any support you may be able to offer. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

So what happened? Here it is, in Leanne’s own words:

“Burning Man became ‘burning woman’ on Friday evening. I was the victim of a freak accident involving a flaming drink at a bar. I’ve suffered second degree burns on my face from below my eyes down, neck, and hands. I am extremely fortunate that my eyes and airways were not damaged at all.

“I am recovering well, in pretty good spirits, and truly feel surrounded by love. Recovery time is estimated at 2-3 weeks for my face and a bit longer for my hands. I am following up with a burn specialist at Sunnybrook at home in Toronto. I’ll most likely be hibernating at home for my recovery weeks since my face looks pretty nasty and I also don’t want to risk exposure to anything that could cause infection.”

When the accident happened, Leanne was airlifted to a burn unit in Sacramento. Two days later, she was transported to Reno, where she rested for a couple days before returning to Toronto. She is now back at home, recovering really well, and had a positive follow up appointment at Sunnybrook burn clinic. Leanne welcomes any kind of support you may be able to offer — including meals, rides and conversation.
