Rebuild Jamaica: Hurricane Melissa Relief Appeal

In the wake of Hurricane Melissa, Jamaica stands at a crossroads between heartbreak and hope. The western communities—once alive with laughter, music, and the scent of fresh sea breeze—now bear the scars of devastation. Families who once gathered under sturdy roofs now find themselves without homes. Entire communities have been torn apart: walls crumbled, roads washed away, and power lines snapped under the force of the storm. The destruction is immense, but so too is the spirit of the Jamaican people.

Everywhere you turn, there are stories of strength and survival. Parents shielded their children through the winds; neighbors opened their doors to strangers; fishermen braved the waters to rescue those trapped by flooding. These are the faces of Jamaica—resilient, compassionate, and full of faith even when faced with unimaginable loss.

Homes that took a lifetime to build have been flattened in seconds. Historic buildings, built by slaves, and the visible reminders of a shared history, taught through generations, lost. Roads connecting families and livelihoods have been erased. Power and water systems, essential for daily life, have been left in ruins. Yet amid the wreckage, there is determination—a shared belief that Jamaica will rise again. As our country’s proud motto reminds us: “Out of Many, One People.” And now, out of one disaster, many hearts will come together to rebuild.

We are Jamaicans, and we are not standing idly by. We have already begun organizing relief efforts from our home, which—by grace—was spared from the worst of the storm. My name is Shanaga Brown and my friends and family stretch from Westmoreland to Saint Elizabeth, two of the Parishes which were the worst hit by Melissa. I will personally make sure every dollar donated is used to maximum effect. My home has become a base of operations, a place where volunteers from around the world have gathered to lend a helping hand. We are partnering with Wabba (Blue Hole Mineral Spring), local hardware stores, and the local quarry at Jamwest to secure building materials at cost. With their support, and with your generosity, we are working to provide immediate assistance—rebuilding homes, restoring access, and giving families a place to start again.

We have already begun assembling shipments of essential food staples—rice, flour, canned goods—to reach those who have lost everything. But the need is great, and we cannot do it alone. We are asking for your help.

Every dollar donated will go directly to assist those most impacted in the western communities. There are no administrative fees, no overhead costs—just action. Every cent will be spent on materials, food, and the immediate needs of families whose lives have been shattered. All donations will be recorded in a community Hurricane Melissa Relief Record for transparency and accountability.

And when the rebuilding is done—when roofs are restored, when roads are safe, and when the lights shine again—everyone who has helped will be welcomed into our communities as family. Because that’s what Jamaicans do: we open our arms, share what we have, and never forget those who stood with us in our hardest times.
