A joyful little public school is changing the game in Detroit. And we’re fighting to make it permanent.
Here’s the part nobody tells you when you start a public school in Detroit:
- Charter schools get zero dollars for buildings.
- No facility funding. No help with renovations. No safety net.
If you want a safe, stable school for kids, you build it yourself. Literally.
So that’s what we did.
We took a long-abandoned building in Pingree Park and rebuilt it into Detroit Prep, the top-performing elementary school in the city.
And now we’re at the very last step. We have four months to finish our 10% down payment and we’re choosing to raise it hand-in-hand with our community.
We are $250,000 away from fully owning this building forever.
Owning our building flips the script for kids and neighbors in Detroit:
