In the early afternoon on July 18th, I began a hike to summit the west ridge of Quandary Peak near Breckenridge, CO. Near the summit, just north of 14,100 ft, I slipped while down climbing an obstacle into a free fall of nearly 30 feet and tumbled an additional 200 feet down a large ravine consisting of loose, jagged rocks. This resulted in serious injury that required a team to aid in my rescue.
This GoFund me is not for me. Rather, it is for the Summit County Rescue Group (SCRG) and the selfless heroes that spent multiple hours assembling a team on a Saturday evening to helivac me off the mountain. The SCRG is an all volunteer, non-profit mountain search and rescue organization whose operations are funded primarily through individual donations and grants. Their services are free to those who call for their assistance. With this being said, 100% of the donations received will be paid forward for the next person in need of search and rescue.
Yes, it has always been a dream of mine to fly in a Black Hawk. Ideally not under the given circumstances, but this rescue was nothing short of miraculous in all respects. SCRG assembled and elite team consisting of two helicopters and approximately 20 volunteers in less than three hours. They incurred enormous costs to save me.
The CO mountaineering community is beyond blessed to have you. I am forever indebted and eternally grateful for your service.
To Bryce and Carmen, thank you. They are Air Force cadets who heard my whistle, came to investigate, called EMS, and ultimately saved my life by keeping me awake, warm, and hydrated. Bryce being trained in systemic trauma protocol knew exactly how to handle my state of shock. I've told you before, but you are my guardian angel and a gift from God delivered at the right time and place.
To Ariana Dinae Mayher. I love you more than words can say. You have been the most treasured constant in my life and I would never wish to experience my days without you. You are the epitome of altruism. Thank you dearly.
Lastly, thank you to those who are able to contribute to the SCRG. Whether it be nickels or dimes, each donation goes to a selfless cause and will save others in similar situations. Please share this with your friends or families. All I ask is to pay it forward. It is not a matter of if, but when another is in need of rescue.
I shed a tear of gratitude while typing this, I am beyond blessed to be alive alive and well today. May every day be a gift.
