As you all know Steff has AML - Acute Myeloid Leukemia - blood cancer. She was diagnosed on May 24, 2024, admitted to BSA in Amarillo Texas the same day and started aggressive chemotherapy on May 26 and has been on chemo everyday since. She was discharged from BSA nearly a month later because with chemo, they achieved remission ( for this cancer that just means her blood counts were in a normal range). Remission was needed so that she could begin the 2 cycles of chemotherapy for the bone marrow transplant process to happen.
She knows she initially went into the hospital on her death bed, but while in remission, she rested, ate right, and exercised to prepare her body for the transplant process…well, this has been a battle for her to say the least. She began aggressive chemotherapy via IV Infusion on 14th, 15th, and 16th of August, she went home for the weekend and then was admitted back into BSA on August 19th. They expected her blood counts to hit bottom (WBC fight infection, Hemoglobin carries oxygen to organs and to entire body, Platelets allow blood to clot or else simple things like a nosebleed could cause her to bleed out, and ANC - absolute neutrophil count - total count of all neutrophils that make up her WBC), but because her WBC are <0.0, she is highly susceptible to infection…that infection being the pneumonia she has in both lungs. They have been giving her the proper antibiotics to fight pneumonia, but her lungs keep getting worse and her temperature keeps rising and gets higher and higher each time and more frequent. So they have done a bronchial scope to determine what OTHER infection she might have in her lungs. Her lung problem is putting a strain on her heart, so now we have to worry about congestive heart failure/CHF. It seems like a lot, because IT IS! She is worried and she is scared, but she is still in the fight…to win!!!!
