Help Steff Breathe & Support Her Family During This Critical Time
Meet Steff Lebsack, a devoted wife, mother, educator, coach, and fierce fighter. At just 41 years old, Steff has battled chronic lung disease her entire life, but her strength and determination have never wavered. Now, she faces her biggest challenge yet—a double lung transplant—and she needs our help.
A Life of Dedication, A Family in Need
Steff and her husband, Kevin, along with their two children, Mary and Karter, live in Denver, Colorado, where they moved nearly five years ago to receive specialized care at National Jewish Health. Steff has dedicated her life to helping others—working as a Speech-Language Pathologist for 16 years and mentoring students at the university level. She’s also a global advocate for the stuttering community and a high school cross country and track coach, working alongside Kevin, who is a teacher and coach himself.
Despite her unwavering commitment to her career and community, Steff’s health has deteriorated. She was born prematurely at 27 weeks and has been sick her entire life, becoming even more critically ill in her 30s. In the past 5½ years, she has not gone more than four months without being hospitalized, with multiple ICU stays and intubations.
Steff has been diagnosed with several severe respiratory conditions, including:
- Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
- COPD
- Severe-Profound Asthma
- Bronchiectasis
- Chronic Respiratory Failure
She relies on a ventilator to sleep and often needs it during the day just to breathe. Her medical costs are overwhelming, with health insurance alone costing $1,600 per month, not to mention medications, hospital stays, and ongoing treatments.
A Difficult Decision: Stopping Work to Survive
Through unimaginable health struggles, Steff has continued working—pushing through pain and exhaustion to provide for her family. But now, she must make the heartbreaking decision to stop working in May 2025 to focus on her health and apply for disability.
In Colorado, disability applicants must completely stop working while their application is processed, a process that can take from five months to multiple years. As the primary income provider, this will be a devastating financial blow to Steff’s family.
How You Can Help
Steff and her family urgently need support to cover the following:
Rent & utilities
Medical expenses & medications
Groceries & daily living costs
Care for Steff as she prepares for her lung transplant or becomes stable enough to not need it
If you are able, please donate to help ease this financial burden. Any amount—big or small—will make a difference in ensuring that Steff can focus on her health and healing without the added stress of financial hardship.
If you’re unable to contribute financially, you can still help by:
Providing meals for the family
Helping with transportation to and from appointments
Assisting with childcare for Mary and Karter
Offering emotional support and prayers
If you'd like to assist in non-monetary ways, please reach out to the family directly for specific needs.
