Aid for Skrin: The Heart of a West End Deli & Community
Donation protected
Early March, 2025, crew at a local Providence deli got bad news. There was going to be a "temporary" closure. We now understand this is because the owner has been diagnosed with cancer. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family as they try to find peace through his crisis. However their choices in closing the deli have endangered the health and safety of their most loyal employees.
Ownership said we were going through this as a team, but this was not true. Their texts were unclear, vague & often contradictory. Major decisions were made in private, and first revealed through Instagram posts or news reports. Crew knew that the business could not survive a crisis like this, but they trusted ownership to pay them for their hard work.
Many staff have children on the way. One is raising 3 kids while fighting off of eviction. Despite being a landlord in the neighborhood, the owner has never paid any of his employees enough to cover a security deposit at his rental properties. The last week was very difficult for the whole team. Paychecks were late and many scheduled shifts were cut (in ways that felt both personal & mean spirited).
This fundraiser has been set up to support bills, childcare & rent for for the Deli's only consistent employee, Skrin! We believe she is the sole reason the Deli lasted so long as a business. If you enjoyed a delicious sandwich at the Deli in the last 10 years: it was all thanks to her hard work! Even though everyone who used to work there has fallen on hard times - she contributed the most to the success of that team, with the least to show for it.
Every little bit helps! After doing so much for the hungry people of Providence’s West End, please find it in your heart to give back to someone who deserves far better.
