My name is Kalann, and I’m the mom of three boys. Our youngest son, Jett, has severe autism. He’s non-verbal and six years old, full of love and energy. Jett loves climbing and exploring, but he struggles with sleeping and self-regulation. Like many children, he is prone to wandering and getting into mischief, but due to his autism, the stakes are much higher for him. We’ve tried various interventions, and the best thing we have been able to find so far for him to get a few hours of sleep is a strong nightly medication. He occasionally has partial seizures and enjoys burrowing. To ensure his safety we need to get him a safety bed. It is very challenging to keep him safe. We have installed child-locked doors, Project Lifesaver through the local sheriff’s department, cameras, and other security measures. However, these measures require constant vigilance. Our ultimate goal is to get a My Cubby or Sleep Safe bed. We have tried everything we can to get insurance coverage and, at one point, we thought we had succeeded only to lose that coverage before we could get the bed. Our current insurance company has already denied services for Jett and we are not optimistic that we can win a fight with them. It’s been a long and stressful journey, and in order to keep Jett as safe as we can, we need to purchase the bed ourselves. These beds are very expensive and we cannot afford to pay for one out of pocket. In order to get one that will serve him for many years, we may need to pay as much as $13,000. Unfortunately, there are limited options for coverage for children with severe autism and special needs. Jett will require lifelong support. Having this bed will not only improve Jett’s comfort but also his safety. He’s a beloved member of our family, and his presence lights up any room. As we often say, “it’s Jett’s World; we just live in it.” While it may seem unusual to ask for help, we would be incredibly grateful if you could consider our request. Thank you.
