Logline: A man faces his greatest fear when coming face-to-face with a bothersome seagull.
Artist’s Statement: Since I was a kid, I’ve been visiting the beach on the island where my mother grew up and something that has always freaked me out was the seagulls. Their shrill sounds, piercing eyes, and the unapologetic way in which they swoop down and dive right for you. Not only that, but I am known to always have a soda on hand and the fear of their desecration of this holy elixir with their poop in a hit-and-run loomed over me whenever they were anywhere close to my vicinity.
While I had originally thought this fear to be something universal, it was always met with laughter whenever I would relay these feelings to those around me. It was only then that I began to see the absurdity of the situation myself and felt compelled to bring it to life on screen. Furthermore, I wanted to make a film about everyone’s own irrational fears and how, despite them sometimes coming from very real places, they have a certain twisted humor that most everyone can resonate with.
“Seagull” is that story, illustrating one of my greatest irrational fears in a way that examines and pokes fun at those each one of us harbors within ourselves. If we can’t point out and find the humor in our own flaws, we only leave ourselves to wrestle with them.
