Hi! I'm Pemi. I'm 1 ½ years old, born on December 2nd, 2023. My family adopted me when I was just 12 weeks old. I am a gentle and loving golden doodle with a big heart and lots of energy. My days are filled with adventure—running along the beach, hiking through the mountains, or strolling through the town with my pack. The most important part of my life is my two favorite little humans (ages 4 and 7). They are my world; it is my job to protect them. I also stay close to my mom while she trains for marathons, making sure she’s safe and never alone on those long runs. At the end of each day, I do what I do best: snuggle up, spread love, and make sure everyone around me feels safe and calm to rest.

On September 9th, 2025, my life almost ended. That night around 9 p.m., I unexpectedly suffered from a life-threatening medical condition called bloat. My stomach filled with fluid, over-expanded, twisted on itself, and cut off blood flow to my organs. I was scared, in pain, and getting worse by the minute. My parents didn't know what was happening to me at first, but they stayed by my side trying to mend my discomfort. Thankfully, their instincts kicked in and rushed me to the vet, because little did we know then, every second counted. The doctors said I was dying and there was little time, so my parents made the decision to try to save me. I underwent emergency surgery and by some miracle, survived. I am recovering now slowly, but with so much hope. I have so much to live for and will keep fighting for my life.

We are the family of Pemi who recently survived a life-threatening condition called bloat. This condition can be fatal within hours, if not minutes, when not treated immediately. If you have experienced this with your own pet or know someone who has, you understand how serious and heartbreaking it can be. Thankfully, by a miracle, we caught it just in time, and emergency surgery saved his life. He’s now on a long road to recovery with more treatment to come as we go, day by day. We couldn’t bear to lose him, and while we are incredibly grateful, the sudden cost of treatment has been a heavy financial burden. We are covering all expenses out-of-pocket and asking for any help—whether through donations or simply sharing his story to raise awareness about this often-missed condition. Note for dog lovers' knowledge: There is an awareness foundation for bloat in dogs. The Morris Animal Foundation has a program called “Beating Bloat in Dogs” which aims to educate owners about the condition and prevention. Also, the AKC Canine Health Foundation has a bloat initiative to address education and research related to the condition.

Today is September 11th, 2025. Pemi is still in the hospital's care. He is being treated at Ocean State Veterinary Hospital by Dr. Mergyl. Thus far, he has endured GDV surgery, removing half of his stomach, then battled aspiration pneumonia. He required IV antibiotics, medications, and a blood plasma transfusion.
