Mateo’s Story

A story of faith, resilience, and hope

Mateo was only 8 years old when he was diagnosed with anaplastic medulloblastoma, one of the most aggressive pediatric brain tumors, already spread to his spinal cord and accompanied by severe hydrocephalus.

That same day he underwent surgery to place a temporary valve.

Ten days later, he faced a 13-hour brain surgery, extremely complex, to remove as much of the tumor as possible, even though it had invaded areas impossible to operate on.

A few days later, doctors placed a Mediport, through which he would receive a full year of chemotherapy and the maximum dose of radiotherapy allowed.

As a consequence of the surgery, he lost all mobility on the left side of his body, affecting his balance and fine motor skills.

With enormous effort and unshakeable faith, he walked again in just 2–3 months, even though his full rehabilitation took over a year.

After that long process, he lived two years cancer-free.

The relapse

In December 2021, the tumor returned.

In Chile, his family was told there were no medical options left and that only palliative care remained.

They refused to give up. In July 2022, Mateo arrived in the United States, where he has now been fighting for three and a half years without stopping.

His current state

In September, Mateo developed hydrocephalus again and underwent surgery to place a permanent valve.

A few days later, he had to be hospitalized due to severe weight loss caused by constant hiccups that had affected him for months and prevented him from eating.

During that hospitalization, he received tomotherapy, a more precise type of radiotherapy, since he had already reached the maximum allowed dose years before.

During this period, he once again lost sensation in his legs and stopped walking.

He is now starting a new rehabilitation process with hope and patience.

He is currently receiving a targeted medicine that attacks only cancerous cells. However, his platelet levels drop quickly, requiring almost weekly transfusions, which prevents him from starting the immunotherapy he urgently needs.

After more than three and a half years of continuous chemotherapy, his body needs additional support: integrative medicine, supplementation, vitamins, and high-cost products that strengthen his immune system. Without these supports, no body could withstand so much.

Mateo inspires not because his path is easy, but because even in the unimaginable, he continues choosing hope.

Una historia de fe, resiliencia y esperanza

Mateo tenía solo 8 años cuando fue diagnosticado con un meduloblastoma anaplásico, uno de los tumores cerebrales infantiles más agresivos, ya diseminado a la médula espinal y acompañado de una hidrocefalia severa.

Ese mismo día fue operado para instalar una válvula provisoria.

Diez días después enfrentó una cirugía de 13 horas, extremadamente compleja, para intentar extraer el tumor que había invadido zonas imposibles de operar.

Pocos días más tarde le instalaron el Mediport, por donde recibiría un año de quimioterapias y la dosis máxima de radioterapia permitida.

Como consecuencia de la cirugía, perdió toda la movilidad de su lado izquierdo, afectando su equilibrio y motricidad fina.

Con esfuerzo y una fe inmensa, volvió a caminar en 2–3 meses, aunque su rehabilitación completa tomó más de un año.

Tras ese proceso, vivió dos años libres de cáncer.

La recaída

En diciembre de 2021, el tumor regresó.

En Chile les dijeron que no había alternativas y que solo quedaba cuidados paliativos.

Su familia no se rindió. En julio de 2022 Mateo llegó a Estados Unidos, donde lleva tres años y medio luchando sin descanso.

Su estado actual

En septiembre, Mateo presentó nuevamente hidrocefalia y fue operado para instalar una válvula permanente.

Días después debió ser hospitalizado por una fuerte baja de peso causada por un hipo constante que llevaba meses afectándolo y le impedía comer.

Durante esa hospitalización recibió tomoterapia, una radioterapia más precisa ya que había alcanzado la dosis máxima años antes.

En ese periodo, perdió nuevamente la sensibilidad en sus piernas y dejó de caminar.

Hoy inicia un nuevo proceso de rehabilitación con esperanza y paciencia.

Actualmente recibe una medicina inteligente que ataca solo células cancerígenas. Pero sus plaquetas bajan rápidamente, obligándolo a recibir transfusiones casi semanales, lo que impide iniciar la inmunoterapia que necesita.

Tras más de tres años y medio de quimioterapia constante, su cuerpo requiere apoyo adicional: medicina integrativa, suplementación, vitaminas y productos de alto costo para fortalecer su sistema inmune. Sin ellos, ningún cuerpo podría sostener tanto.
