Hello,
My name is Jim Cummins, and I’m asking for your support on behalf of my daughter, Mary Cummins—a devoted mother, survivor of domestic violence, and a woman now facing the hardest chapter of her life.
Mary has been diagnosed with Wilson’s Disease, a rare, life-threatening genetic disorder that causes toxic copper buildup in the liver, brain, and other organs. For over 20 years, Mary’s symptoms were misdiagnosed and dismissed. Doctors repeatedly told her she was drinking—even when she had gone completely sober. She lived through years of shame, fear, and confusion, constantly being told that everything wrong with her body was her own fault.
Everything changed when one strong and patient doctor finally believed her. She listened, ordered the right tests, and referred Mary to specialists. They were shocked to discover the truth: Mary had been living all along with undiagnosed Wilson’s Disease, and now her liver is failing. She needs a liver transplant and is undergoing evaluation for additional organ complications and full diagnostic clarity. She is currently unable to work and must now travel to the University of Washington—and possibly the Mayo Clinic—to receive life-saving care.
But her medical crisis is just one of the battles she’s facing.
While living in Fort Hood, Texas, Mary bravely left an abusive relationship to protect herself and her children. She has always had primary custody of her oldest son, Xavier, who remains safely in her care. He, too, was deeply affected by the trauma they endured. Once abuse began to affect her children, Mary reached out for help and took the steps needed to leave. She has done everything possible to give her sons a safe, stable life. She now faces a critical family court hearing that will impact her time with her son and affect the long-term well-being of her family.
“I did what I was supposed to—I left, I protected my kids. And somehow, I’m still the one being punished.”
Mary is now preparing for a major trial in February—while undergoing constant medical testing and treatment.
Your donation will help Mary with:
Liver transplant care and travel to UW and possibly Mayo Clinic
Basic living expenses while she is unable to work
Genetic testing and care for her children, who may also be affected due to the hereditary nature of Wilson’s Disease
Mary is not just surviving—she is standing up, speaking out, and fighting for the unheard. She’s fighting for the chronically misdiagnosed, for DV survivors, for children stuck in broken systems, and for the men and women no one believed.
“This year has been the hardest of my life—but also the one that’s made me strongest. I’m more grounded, stronger, and more determined than ever. My family tells me all the time: they’re shocked by how much strength I’ve shown. And I’m not done fighting.”
If you can’t donate, we completely understand. But please—share this campaign with anyone you can. Your share might help a sick, undiagnosed person finally get answers. It might help a parent stuck in a terrible situation. And your prayers are always welcome.
Thank you for reading. Thank you for believing in Mary.
With all my heart,
Jim Cummins
Loving Father
