On Wednesday, November 5th, our little Lucy went into the vet to be spayed and have a mammary mass removed. Once surgery had started, our vet found that one of her ovaries was the size of a golf ball (they are typically the size of a thumb nail). Surgery went well and Lucy came home that evening.
On Thursday afternoon Lucy started bleeding from one of her incisions. We returned to the vet thinking that she would be able to fix her up and we could come home. But our vet could not determine what was happening so we were rushed to the emergency vet 2 hours away. Lucy was critical when we arrived. She was admitted and went through extensive tests that night. On Friday morning her numbers began to rapidly drop so her care team gave her a whole blood infusion and went in for surgery by 2pm.
Once in surgery, they found a blood clot the size of the surgeon’s fist. They removed it and found that an adrenal tumor had ruptured. The team was able to successfully remove the tumor.
We assumed Lucy would begin to show signs of improvement quite quickly. On Saturday Lucy was showing a little more of her Scottie personality, not wanting the doctor to do an ultrasound, not wanting to leave the comfort of her up kennel but doctors were still concerned because she in not regenerating her platelets. She was been giving many blood infusions so doctors are hoping this is because of all the new blood she has received.
We are waiting for our Sunday update and hopefully we will begin to see her numbers increase so we know her body is starting to heal from all the trauma from the surgeries.
I know times are tough for everyone but we are reaching out because her estimate at the emergency vet is between $13,000-$18,000 at this time. If you are able to help, thank you!
update:
We went to be with Lucy this afternoon with the hopes of getting her to eat and letting her know how loved she is. Not many changes medically for today. We decided that it was time to bring her home as each night she was in the ER was adding to our overall cost.
we got to see her Scottie ears perk up when we asked her to go for a walk and then a ride. We was ready to break out of doggie jail.
we made it home, she is resting and I’m doing everything I can to get some food into her. She hasn’t eaten since Tuesday evening so she desperately needs some nutrition in her belly.
We are all loving on our girl and praying we start to see some improvements! Thank you all for your generosity! I can’t believe how amazing so many people are!
