So this is Lily. She’s my best friend and she’s a wonder-cat. She’s 20 years old, and she’s been in my son Mylo’s life since the beginning. Mylo had a home birth, and Lily was right there throughout the process like a furry little birth doula. She’s seen Mylo through all his surgeries, protected him as a baby when he was sleeping, and seen me through two major relationships. She’s exceedingly affectionate, social, resilient, hardy, loving, and loves to groom and comfort me every chance she gets. She’s also enormous and solid like a Viking princess, with a thick polar bear-like pelt!
This past year has been rough for Lily. She lost her longtime frenemy Oscar, my beloved Siamese asshole, and she’s had a slew of health challenges. She had to be treated with radioactive iodine for hypothyroidism, which was successful — but she’s also been battling ongoing kidney and bladder infections, for which she needs daily injections of IV fluids and antibiotics. All of these treatments have maxed out her kitty health insurance, and now I’m paying for things out of pocket, which just keeps adding up. I’ve spent $9,000 on Lily in the past year.
And now Lily needs a trip to the dentist. They think her recurrent infections might be caused by some troubled teeth. Pet dentists are flipping expensive because pets require general anesthesia for this service. They have no idea what work she’ll need, so Lily’s estimate is anywhere from $3,000-$5,000. And no, care credit is not a viable option for us.
Which brings me to all of you…
I’m a single mom and caregiver for my son Mylo, who is medically complex and has special needs. I really want to help Lily and continue to care for her in the way that she deserves. However, my resources are finite, and I’ve already done what I can to help this kitty, who, at 20 years old — other than a few health challenges — seems to want to keep on living and being the amazing emotional support animal that she is! Given that some cats live into their 30s, I don’t want to give up on Lily’s potential.
Can any of you pitch in to help Lily get the dental work she needs? In gratitude, I’ll send out a 4x6 print of a fancy 80s style family portrait of Lily, Mylo, and me to whoever can contribute to Lily’s cause.
