Donate to Save Koko: Emergency Treatment Required

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

I never thought I’d have to make one of these, but I’m doing everything I can to save my baby Koko and we need help. Koko is the sweetest, most gentle dog I’ve ever known. She’s my best friend. She’s more than a pet, she’s my family.

A few days ago, she suddenly got very sick after a complication from receiving a vaccine. She stopped eating, became extremely weak, and her gums turned pale. We rushed her to the vet and found out she has developed IMHA, a life-threatening autoimmune disease where her body attacks her own red blood cells. We were told it was critical and she needed emergency care fast. Over the weekend, she quickly declined.

After the vet in the RGV told us they couldn't do more for her they advised us to go to a specialty emergency vet in San Antonio. We dropped everything and drove 4 hours away and rushed her to the vet here. Since then, she’s had a blood transfusion, has been hospitalized in intensive care, and is now being seen by an internal medicine specialist and a criticalist. After 5 days of care her blood count is finally stabilizing, but the treatment has taken a toll on her liver and she now needs a feeding tube so her body can heal.

The doctors say her condition is guarded (50/50), but she’s fighting and she’s still here. She’s been alert, responding to our voices, and she even drank water on her own yesterday. She just needs time, treatment, and support to recover. And right now her skin is yellow from the liver not functioning properly. She’s still in there and I know she’s not ready to give up.

So far, we’ve gone over $7,000 in debt on her care here in San Antonio and we don’t know how much more is ahead. They're estimating around $12,000 total for the next few days plus the $3,000 we already spent at the RGV vet. I know it sounds insane, vet bills are ridiculously expensive. There’s talk of possible transport to another hospital if she needs more advanced treatment like plasma exchange, which could cost thousands more. I’m doing everything I can to give her a chance, but I can’t do it alone anymore.

I have been staying in San Antonio since paying for hotels, and we are taking it day by day. We are not sure how long I will have to stay, but I will stay as long as Koko is here.

If you can help, in any amount, it would mean the world. All donations go directly to her medical bills, hospitalization, medications, and recovery care. If you can’t donate, please just share this and keep Koko in your thoughts.

I love her more than I can put into words. Thank you for helping us keep going.

Love,
Suzanne and Koko
