More than 400 guinea pigs were discovered in a heartbreaking hoarding situation in South Los Angeles. The first on the scene was Southern California Guinea Pig Rescue (SCGPR), who uncovered hundreds of guinea pigs living in overcrowded, unsanitary, and dangerous conditions. What was thought to be 200 animals turned out to be closer to 500, many suffering from illness, injuries, and neglect.
With support from two incredible rescue partners, Wee Companions and The Rescue Garden, SCGPR has already removed dozens of the most at-risk guinea pigs. This includes nursing mothers, sick and injured animals, and many pregnant females. Some of the rescued sows have already given birth while in foster care.
GuineaDad, a small animal wellness brand focused on premium care for guinea pigs, is donating as many fleece liners and hay as possible. But there is still so much more that’s needed. These animals need immediate medical care, food, bedding, safe housing, and support for foster families.
Why this is urgent
Guinea pigs can become pregnant at just four weeks old and give birth every two months. Each litter can have several babies. Without fast intervention, this situation could have spiraled even further. Now, thanks to rescue volunteers, these guinea pigs are finally safe. But the work has only just begun.
