November has never been a good month for our family, and this year is breaking us. As we stand on the eve of my sister Jessica’s brain cancer diagnosis anniversary—already a heartbreaking and terrifying reminder—we’ve been hit with another crisis we never saw coming.

My sister Amy’s beloved 4-year-old golden retriever, Archie, was rushed to Rochester today for emergency surgery. Yesterday he suddenly began violently vomiting and became frighteningly lethargic. At Urgent Care, an X-ray showed a “squishy, non-food” object lodged in his stomach. They tried all night to flush it through with fluids, hoping desperately he could pass it on his own—but nothing worked.

Now Archie is in surgery, fighting for his life.

He is the sweetest, gentlest dog, and Amy is doing absolutely everything she can to save him. But the costs are crushing. Between the Urgent Care visit and the emergency surgery, she’s already facing $8,000—and that’s only if there are no complications.

Our family is already stretched unbearably thin caring for Jessica’s medical needs, and now this sudden emergency is pushing us to a breaking point. We simply cannot keep up. We don’t want to ask again… but we have no choice.
