The Amhara region of Ethiopia currently experiencing significant armed conflict. Since April 2023, the region has seen a growing conflict between Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF) and the Amhara Fano militia, a loose collation of Amhara armed group. This conflict has escalated into full-scale insurgency by the Fano, who seek control of the region's major cities and accuse the government of marginalizing and conspiring against the Amhara people. The conflict has resulted in widespread human rights abuses, including drone strikes on civilians, mass arrests, displacement, and a severe humanitarian crises. Civilians are caught in the crossfire, facing violence, restrictions on movement and communication, and a lack of humanitarian aid. The conflict is a complex issue stemming from factors including a mismanaged political transition, the fallout from the Tigray war, and a lack of perceived accountability for past violence against Amhara communities.
The Amhara region has been deconstructed by war and the Ethiopian government admitted to rebuilding the region and to rebuilding efforts requiring a budget of around $11 billion. Farmers cannot plough and cultivate in the region. The majority of the Amhara people rely on farming, but they don't have access to buy fertilizer now because the government has monopolized it and won't supply them with fertilizer to starve the Amhara. The government employees don't have salaries; roads, bridges, electric power, telecommunications, schools, hospitals, clinics, colleges, universities, and airport runways are damaged from the past 2 years of war. Ethiopian defense forces raped Amhara women and children, HIV has increased by 7.5%, and unwanted pregnancy has risen by 9% according to the regional government of Amhara researchers. According to Felegehiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital in Bahir Dar, 179 Amhara youths (sample) committed suicide because of political and economic crises, lack of jobs and hope, brought on by the war. In the past 30 years, 7 million Amhara were displaced from the Oromia region, Southern Ethiopia region, and their own (Amhara) region (Wollo, Gondar, Dembia, Addis Ababa, Changni, Metekel). They lack medicine, food, clothes, and shelter. Thousands of Amhara people have been detained and imprisoned. More than 100,000 Amhara were killed in the TPLF and central government war and by Abiy Ahmed Ali's government.
As an Amhara political activist, I have a responsibility to protect and to help secure the Amhara people from hunger and displacement. So, I request all Amhara diaspora, Amhara merchants, wealthy Amharas, as well as other Ethiopians to help as much as possible.
God save the Amhara people and all Ethiopians.
