My name is Alejandro Baca, and I have been diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) — a progressive, terminal lung disease that causes irreversible scarring of the lungs. There is no cure. My doctors have made it clear that my only chance at survival is a lung transplant. Without it, time is not on my side.

Everyday tasks that many take for granted—walking from one room to another, climbing into my vehicle, even speaking for too long—have become exhausting battles. Once, I was proud to dedicate myself to caring for others as an EMT, helping patients and their families in their most vulnerable moments. Today, I find myself on the other side of that stretcher, facing challenges I never thought I would endure.

The transplant process is incredibly complex, physically and emotionally—but also financially. My transplant team requires that I show proof that I can maintain my health insurance and living expenses for several months post-surgery, since recovery means I will not be able to work. The reality is overwhelming: between the cost of premiums, deductibles, copays, medications, and everyday living expenses, I cannot do this alone.

This is why I am reaching out to my community, friends, family, and anyone with a compassionate heart.
