Emergency Appeal: Help Heal 35 Rescued Horses from an Illegal Slaughterhouse in Bangladesh
35 horses have just been rescued from an illegal slaughterhouse operating under the most horrific and inhumane conditions imaginable.

What Happened
When Obhoyaronno rescue team arrived at the scene, they discovered a nightmare. Horses were being slaughtered right next to the live ones, with no separation between blood, carcasses, excrement, and the terrified survivors. The stench of death filled the air. Some horses had already collapsed and died from starvation and shock—one died just two hours before the rescue team arrived.
For at least three days—and likely longer—they had not been adequately fed or given clean water. They were tied so tightly they could not even lie down.
Many of the horses are severely traumatised, suffering from:
- Gaping wounds and maggot infestations
- Skin diseases and infections
- Rope and band injuries around their legs, suggesting intentional torture
- Eye infections and partial blindness
- Severe emaciation, dehydration, and malnutrition
Among them are two babies, and heartbreakingly, one mare miscarried shortly after rescue—her fetus, less than ten inches long, was found beside her just before transport.
The conditions were beyond comprehension: the meat of slaughtered horses was being diced beside the dead carcasses, while others watched in terror.
Veterinarians, led by Dr. Johirul Islam, suspect the horses had been underfed or malnourished for at least 3–5 months.
We also want to acknowledge and commend the Gazipur authorities for their swift and decisive action in bringing this horrific cruelty to an end within their jurisdiction. They are now working to ensure that the perpetrator is brought to justice and permanently prevented from inflicting such suffering again.
What We’re Doing
Obhoyaronno has taken full custody of all 35 horses, ensuring their immediate safety. Our dedicated team of veterinarians and animal welfare workers are working around the clock to stabilise them.
However, these animals will require months—of intensive medical care, rehabilitation, and emotional healing to recover from their trauma. Then we will start the adoption process.
What Your Donation Supports
Every contribution helps us provide:
- Nutritious feed and clean water
- Emergency veterinary care, antibiotics, and wound treatment
- Shelter, bedding, and protection from the elements
- Compensation for animal welfare staff and caretakers
- Rehabilitation and gentle socialisation to rebuild trust
- Long-term adoption and rehoming for horses who can recover
Our Goal
We aim to raise $15,000 USD (≈ 1.8 million BDT) to fund the first 4 months of urgent care for all 35 rescued horses—covering food, shelter, medicine, and veterinary treatment. Every dollar counts. Your help today will save lives and give these horses a second chance at peace, safety, and compassion. We are also actively working to find forever homes for the horses as soon as they are medically cleared for adoption.

Beyond companion animals, the organisation is also committed to improving the lives of farmed, working, and captive wildlife. Continuously evolving, Obhoyaronno is expanding its scope to address all aspects of animal welfare across Bangladesh.
