Our dear friend Sabrina DeVos needs your help. Sabrina had a severe case of Covid in mid-May, from which she never totally recovered. A quick backstory, after her husband Vince's death from pancreatic cancer 6 years ago, Sabrina became a professional caretaker. On Sunday 6/23, Sabrina's client insisted that she leave him and go to the ER because she was so short of breath. She texted me as soon as she got there, her BP and O2 were very low. They were looking for Pulmonary Embolisms or Pneumonia. Both were negative. Monday she had further tests and met with a Cardiologist who informed her she needed a Heart Transplant. We all decided that she needed to go to St Luke's Transplant Hospital in Kansas City, MO, where our son Matt had his Heart Transplant 24 years ago.
It was Wednesday evening before Sabrina was settled into her room at St Luke's. She and her daughter Madison met with Dr's on Thursday and by Friday her Dr told her she would be listed for Transplant on Monday, awaiting results on one test. The weekend was hard, her vitals etc were not good. Monday we got the news that Sabrina was not a candidate for a HT, her body would 100% reject foreign tissue.
The next choice was an LVAD. Left Ventricular Assist Device. This is a battery-operated pump that through Open Heart Surgery is attached directly to the Heart to keep it pumping and to keep Sabrina alive. The Surgery was long and left Sabrina wiped out and in terrible pain. She remained in the CICU for a week. After being moved, Sabrina's Heart wasn't pumping the way the Dr's were satisfied with, they scheduled another surgery to install a Defibrillator. Unfortunately, Sabrina
developed Pneumonia and had to have drains reinserted, which put off her surgery.
In the meantime PT had her up and walking some and OT came to give Sabrina, Madi and her husband Philip a class in how to take care of Sabrina's wounds and how to change her Battery, which gets done 2X a day. It's large and bulky, she will have to have a vest to put it in, from what Madi told me.
Bob went for a visit last weekend and in order for Sabrina to go home, she needs a Generator in case of a power outage. She will also need Full-time care and Cardiac Rehabilitation for Months to come.
Sabrina will be Recovering at Madi and Philip's house, where she needs a full hospital-like set up. Madi is going to work from home, which is what she's done for the last month while with Sabrina in KC. Philip has come for many 1 day visits, 6 hours round trip from the Lake of the Ozarks. Madi didn't have access to a kitchen to make meals at the hotel, so the expenses for meals have been quite high, as she was eating at the hospital cafeteria for most meals.
Between the cost of the Generator, Gas, Lodging and Meals, there's very little $$ left....and the Medical Bills are just starting to arrive.
Sabrina will probably never be able to return to her Caregiver Career, if not any kind of work at all. She has a Very Long Road to Recovery ahead of her.
Can you Please keep Sabrina and her Family in your Prayers.
And if you can find it in Your Heart to Donate to help Sabrina, she will be Forever Grateful.❤️❤️
Thank you!!
