Help Ruth Heal: Fighting Rare Cancer with Courage
I’m Ruth—a mother, grandmother, writer, and survivor. I’ve danced through storms, laughed through tears, and now I’m facing the biggest challenge of my life: a rare and aggressive cancer that demands everything I’ve got.
In June, I was diagnosed with two fast-moving forms of bladder cancer:
- High-grade small cell/neuroendocrine carcinoma (SCNC)
- High-grade papillary urothelial carcinoma
These cancers are rare, aggressive, and require immediate, intense treatment. I’ve already undergone surgery to remove a tumor, and beginning July 21, I’ll start chemotherapy three days in a row every three weeks, continuing for at least 90 days. Additional surgery may follow, along with another round of chemo. This marathon of treatment will last a minimum of six months, and the path ahead demands every ounce of strength that I have.

Even with insurance, the out-of-pocket medical costs are staggering. I’m facing:
- Past diagnostics and imaging (including a PET scan not covered by Medicare)
- Surgery and ongoing chemotherapy, and possible radiation therapy
