Robbie Kemper and his difficult journey with
Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) is a cancer of the blood affecting the bone marrow. It strikes quickly and, if not treated immediately, is debilitating and deadly. It causes the bone marrow to produce unhealthy blood cells which choke out the healthy ones. The body’s immune system is severely struggling to survive. I did not see or feel this coming on.
I was initially diagnosed in April 2023. After aggressive chemotherapy treatment, a month in the hospital on the oncology floor, and three months of chemo follow-ups, I was getting back to teaching again and working in my painting studio. I was in remission for nearly a year when the AML returned in March 2024.
The best option for success was determined to be a stem cell transplant. After more chemo and a careful and very thoughtful search for a donor, I had my transplant in July 2024. I’m currently rebuilding strength as I continue to recover and look ahead.
I’m an adjunct professor at the University of Cincinnati, teaching graphic design, typography, and photography. As an adjunct professor, I only get paid the semester I teach, for the classes I teach. There is no available University-provided insurance or support.
Due to AML, treatments, and isolation for healing and safety, I have not yet been able to return to the classroom. I hope to return to teaching year-round, but that’s likely a year away.
Just now getting back to painting as energy allows.
My wife Joanne and I are grateful for good health insurance, but the deductibles do add up. The loss of teaching income and painting sales to cover daily life and expenses is a significant hardship.
I’m very fortunate to have loving family support, great care, and physical perseverance.
I’m getting back to life and looking ahead. AML is not going to take me out; too many lovely things to do and places to go. The financial obligations are worrisome until teaching possibilities re-engage in the fall.
I’d appreciate you considering pitching in.
Thank you,
Robbie
