My Mom has been a dedicated nurse for the past 30 years, spending her life caring for others. Now, she finds herself in need of care and support.

In September 2024, she underwent an L5-S1 spinal fusion, which forced her to take three months off work. She returned for just one day before being hospitalized again—this time for severe kidney stones. Over the next two months, she endured multiple stent placements, nephrostomy tubes, and lithotripsy procedures.

This past Wednesday, March 19th, she was rushed to the emergency room with a persistent fever and severe flank pain. A full septic workup revealed severe pyelonephritis and an outlet obstruction. Her care team explained that her largest kidney stone had caused extensive inflammation and scarring of her ureter, blocking urine flow. She now has persistent hydronephrosis, meaning her kidney is under constant pressure and unable to drain urine.

A nephrostomy tube was placed to relieve the pressure, but imaging showed that only the lower portion of her kidney was draining—the upper part has been completely cut off due to damage. Her current care team believes her kidney may need to be removed. However, they have reached out to Northwestern Hospital in Chicago to explore options to save it.

With her ongoing health battles, my mom faces another indefinite period off work. As the primary breadwinner for our family—since my stepdad is disabled and unable to work—this has placed an overwhelming financial burden on her.
