In August–September 2025, Punjab—once the breadbasket of Pakistan—was struck by its most catastrophic floods in decades. Swollen by relentless monsoon rains and cross-border dam releases, the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers submerged over 1,400 villages, forcing more than 1.2 million people from their homes, while thousands of acres of cropland were destroyed.

Families are now forced to live in overcrowded relief camps with insufficient food, clean water, or medical care. The risk of disease, homelessness, and food insecurity looms large. Meanwhile, disruptions to agriculture threaten regional food supply and livelihoods—and by extension, the broader economy that relies heavily on Punjab’s harvests.
