I still remember the day my brother Khaleel's world shattered like it was yesterday. He was only 13 when the horrors of Gaza tore through our lives last year. We had fled to the southern refuge, hoping to find some safety, but fate was cruel. Khaleel was caught in a bombing, and in an instant, he lost both of his legs. I watched helplessly as my mother and I stood by his side in a hospital in Egypt, our hearts breaking as we saw him fighting for his life. His body was battered beyond recognition, and we couldn’t do anything but pray.

Before the bombing, our family had already been torn apart by the war. Half of us evacuated to the south, while the rest stayed in the north, living in constant fear, unsure of who would survive and who wouldn’t. We were disconnected, lost in the chaos, and all we could do was wait and pray for a miracle.

Against all odds, we found hope through Heal Palestine. They helped bring us to the United States, to Chicago, where Khaleel could continue his treatment. But our journey here came at an unimaginable cost. We lost everything—our home, our belongings, our way of life. But amidst all the tragedy, we were fortunate enough to cross paths with people who showed us kindness, and who believed in our strength to rebuild.

I’ve always tried to stay strong, especially for Khaleel, but even now, it feels like we’re starting from nothing. I’ve recently completed my pharmacy degree online, but rebuilding our lives after the war is a painful and overwhelming task. We have nothing left, but I believe that, together, we can rise from the ashes.
