Tragically, on November 9th, our friends experienced a house fire caused by their refrigerator. Amanda was inside when the fire started and was able to call first responders quickly and evacuate with the family dog, Indy. Everyone is safe; however, the damage to their home and their belongings was extensive.
The assessment of damage is still ongoing, but they know that the first floor of their two story home, in addition to Caleb’s bedroom and playroom will be nearly completely unsalvageable. While they wait for answers about what of their belongings may be recovered and restored, their home is unlivable. They are now living out of a hotel, slowly documenting their home inventory, supporting Caleb’s routines, and navigating the many hurdles of working with insurance companies. While we are hopeful that insurance will cover the major losses, the process is long, slow, and full coverage is never guaranteed.
Many people in their community have been asking for updates and how they can help. If you know them, you won’t be surprised that accepting help does not come easily for them—they are often the givers. They wanted to be explicit: this is not a fundraiser to replace insurance coverage. Instead, it is a response to the outpouring of care and the many folks asking, “How can I help?” This site is a centralized place to share information, support, and updates.
Brian and Amanda are focused on finding ways to slowly make their day to day as close to normal as possible for Caleb as they navigate the long road ahead. Any funds given here are intended to provide comfort and a bit of relief during this difficult, liminal period—a bridge between the fire and whatever “normal” eventually looks like again. These funds will be used at their discretion for things like taking Caleb on a fun excursion, Christmas decorations for whatever temporary housing they land in, investing in much-needed self-care, or simply replenishing immediate essentials as they rebuild their routines while they wait to rebuild their home.
Thank you for holding them through this moment with such generosity and love. Every act of support—big or small, financial or not—helps remind them that their community is behind them. Thank you for sharing their story and holding this family in your thoughts.
