I’ve watched my friend try to leave her abusive relationship three times, only to be pulled back because of a lack of financial resources. Each time, the cycle of verbal, emotional, and financial abuse restarted, leaving her feeling trapped.

For years, her ex-partner has controlled her through money and fear. She was never treated as an equal, never added to the deed or mortgage, never given shared money, and yet was always expected to be the primary parent. Whenever she tried to leave, he threatened to use his wealth to hire the best custody lawyers money could buy, knowing she couldn’t afford one.
