We have an opportunity to purchase and permanently protect Lots 37 & 38 on Diplomat Drive —a ¼-acre parcel of natural habitat that is home to native plants, mature trees, and wildlife.

We already own six other conservation parcels on the west side of Diplomat Drive. By acquiring this property, we can continue building a connected network of protected greenspace—a natural corridor where wildlife have more space to move, feed, shelter, and raise their young.

This parcel is a varied area of neighborhood landscape, with a mix of open sandy spots and acorn-bearing oak trees, making it useful to a variety of wildlife including Florida Scrub-jays, Gopher Tortoises, Northern Bobwhite Quail, Opossum, Bobcat and other native wildlife.

Why Does This Matter?

The “woods” you see remaining in our neighborhoods are just an illusion and may not be there tomorrow. Unless land is protected for conservation, it will eventually be cleared and developed. Once a natural habitat is gone, it cannot simply be replanted.

Native trees and plants can—and should—be planted in our neighborhoods. But a newly planted tree cannot replace the mature trees, native vegetation, healthy soils, food, shelter, and wildlife habitat found in an intact natural landscape.

But to a Scrub-jay looking for food, a Bobcat seeking shelter, or a native plant growing in the sandy native soil, ¼ acre can mean everything.
